What makes wisdom tooth removal cost more?
A surgical removal costs several times more than a simple extraction because the dentist may need to cut the gum or remove bone. The tooth's position, the number of teeth, the dentist's specialty and sedation all add to the bill.
- Simple or surgical. An erupted tooth may come out like any other; an impacted one needs surgery. Royce Dental Group says surgery can take up to an hour per tooth, against about 30 minutes for a non-surgical extraction.
- Sedation. Royce Dental Group notes intravenous sedation by an anaesthetist can be arranged, which adds a fee.
- Extras. Consultation, X-rays (an orthopantomogram is S$65 to S$104 under the CHAS benchmark) and medication are often charged separately.
How much MediSave can I use for wisdom tooth surgery?
MediSave can pay for surgical wisdom tooth removal at MediSave-accredited clinics, up to the limit for the procedure's surgical table plus day-surgery charges. Royce Dental Group says eligible patients can use up to S$1,950 for wisdom tooth surgery, that immediate family members' MediSave accounts can be used if yours is short, and that MediSave covers surgical procedures, so check before assuming a simple extraction qualifies.
MOH sets MediSave surgical limits by table, from S$240 (table 1A) upwards, plus up to S$830 a day for day surgery. The exact amount depends on your procedure's code, so ask the clinic to confirm it.
Is it cheaper at a public hospital or a private clinic?
The overlap is large. MOH's public fees run from S$784 to S$1,319 per tooth before GST, and private published prices start from about S$817.50. Private clinics at the upper end charge up to about S$2,000.
Compare like with like: a quote from an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for a deeply impacted tooth will not match a general dentist's fee for a partly erupted one. Ask each provider what the fee covers before comparing.
