In Singapore, gallbladder removal typically costs S$2,043 to S$21,157 (2026), including GST. The lower figure is MOH's typical subsidised day-surgery bill at a public hospital; the higher is the typical private hospital inpatient bill for a routine operation. Complicated cases cost more, with a typical private bill of S$26,437.
All general figures on this page come from the Ministry of Health's published bill information, based on actual bills from 1 January to 31 December 2023. "Typical" means the median: half of patients paid less. This page is general information, not medical advice. Speak to a registered doctor.
How much does gallbladder removal cost in Singapore?
A routine gallbladder removal (MOH code SF801G) typically costs S$2,043 to S$2,531 after subsidy at a public hospital, S$7,651 to S$8,647 without subsidy, and S$21,157 as a private hospital inpatient. These are median 2023 bills, including GST.
| Setting (routine case, SF801G) | Typical bill | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Public day surgery, subsidised | S$2,043 | S$1,464 to S$3,084 |
| Public Ward C, subsidised | S$2,531 | S$1,684 to S$3,669 |
| Public Ward B2, subsidised | S$2,075 | S$1,526 to S$3,179 |
| Public day surgery, unsubsidised | S$7,651 | S$7,482 to S$7,970 |
| Public Ward B1 | S$8,621 | S$6,941 to S$10,752 |
| Public Ward A | S$8,647 | S$5,580 to S$10,584 |
| Private hospital, inpatient | S$21,157 | S$19,363 to S$23,802 |
MOH also publishes bills for individual hospitals. At Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the typical routine bill was S$1,588 in Ward B2 (S$1,130 to S$2,319), S$2,599 in Ward C (S$1,968 to S$4,201) and S$5,286 in Ward A (S$4,813 to S$5,580). At Mount Alvernia Hospital, a 2-bed ward bill was typically S$17,895 (S$15,761 to S$18,956), with an average stay of 1.8 days.
What do private surgeons and anaesthetists charge?
For a routine case, MOH's recommended private fee range is S$6,540 to S$9,156 for the surgeon and S$1,417 to S$2,289 for the anaesthetist, including GST. Hospital charges add S$8,720 to S$11,990. These benchmarks are a guide, not a cap.
| Fee | Routine case (SF801G), with GST | Routine case, before GST | Complicated case (SF706G), before GST |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surgeon | S$6,540 to S$9,156 | S$6,000 to S$8,400 | S$6,200 to S$9,600 |
| Anaesthetist | S$1,417 to S$2,289 | S$1,300 to S$2,100 | S$1,400 to S$2,300 |
| Doctor's ward visits | S$230 to S$450 a day | S$210 to S$420 a day | Not shown |
| Hospital | S$8,720 to S$11,990 | S$8,000 to S$11,000 | S$9,000 to S$13,300 |
MOH's routine-case hospital benchmark assumes an average stay of 2 days. The surgeon's fee covers the assistant doctors and nurses the surgeon brings in. You will see the figure S$6,200 to S$9,600 quoted on several clinic websites: that is MOH's surgeon range for a complicated case before GST, not any clinic's own fee.
Why do some gallbladder operations cost more?
The bill rises mainly with case complexity, ward type and subsidy status. MOH codes complicated surgery as SF706G rather than SF801G, and its typical private inpatient bill for that code is S$26,437, against S$21,157 for a routine case.
MOH's fee benchmark notes say surgeon fees at the higher end may reflect repeat surgery, scar tissue (adhesions), altered anatomy, earlier inflammation or a stuck (impacted) stone. Urgent operations done after office hours may also be charged above the benchmark.
| Setting (complicated case, SF706G) | Typical bill |
|---|---|
| Public day surgery, subsidised | S$2,087 (S$1,517 to S$3,485) |
| Public Ward B2 / Ward C | S$2,941 / S$3,077 |
| Public day surgery, unsubsidised | S$9,991 |
| Public Ward B1 | S$10,059 |
| Public Ward A | S$12,610 (S$8,720 to S$15,372) |
| Private hospital, inpatient | S$26,437 (S$23,088 to S$31,243) |
| Private hospital, clinic setting | S$29,265 (S$25,432 to S$38,877) |
Is day surgery cheaper than a hospital stay?
Usually, yes, in public hospitals. A subsidised routine case typically cost S$2,043 as day surgery against S$2,531 in Ward C, and an unsubsidised one S$7,651 as day surgery against S$8,621 in Ward B1. Your surgeon decides whether day surgery suits you.
Some single-hospital day-surgery bills for complicated cases are lower still: MOH lists S$2,072 at Changi General Hospital and S$1,496 at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. In private hospitals, each extra night adds ward charges and doctor's ward visits, which MOH benchmarks at S$230 to S$450 a day including GST.
Can I use MediSave or insurance for gallbladder surgery?
Some clinics accept MediSave and insurance, but how much you can claim depends on your plan and your case. We have not listed MediSave withdrawal limits or MediShield Life payouts here, so confirm both with CPF Board, MOH and your insurer before booking.
Among the clinics below, Surgicare states it is MediSave-accredited, KYM Surgery says gallbladder treatment is insurance claimable, and Dr Calvin Ong's Farrer Park profile lists AIA, Great Eastern, HSBC Life and Prudential panels. If you have an Integrated Shield Plan, note that new riders sold since 2019 must include a co-payment of at least 5%, according to Thomson Medical, so expect to pay part of the bill yourself.
Which clinics offer gallbladder surgery, and what do they charge?
The four private practices below all offer gallbladder surgery and are listed A to Z. None publishes its own surgery fee: where their sites show a figure, it is MOH's benchmark, so surgery prices are on enquiry. Surgicare publishes a consultation fee from S$200 before GST.

How do you choose a clinic for gallbladder surgery?
Check the surgeon's registration and qualifications, ask for an itemised written estimate that names the MOH procedure code, and confirm which hospitals the surgeon can admit you to and which insurers they work with. Compare that estimate against MOH's benchmarks.
- Registration: search the surgeon's name on the Singapore Medical Council register and the Academy of Medicine's specialist directory.
- Procedure code: ask whether your case is expected to be routine (SF801G) or complicated (SF706G), as the benchmarks differ.
- What is included: ask whether the estimate covers the anaesthetist, hospital, ward visits, tests and follow-up.
- Hospital and ward: the same operation can cost several times more in a private hospital than in a subsidised public ward.
- Insurance: check whether the surgeon is on your insurer's panel and whether you need a pre-authorisation.
- After-hours: ask how fees change if surgery is urgent or out of office hours.
What do people ask about gallbladder surgery costs?
The questions below cover public versus private bills, insurance, complicated cases and the costs added to the operation itself. Figures are MOH's unless stated otherwise.
How much does gallbladder removal cost at a public hospital compared with a private one?
For a routine case, MOH's typical 2023 bills were S$2,043 to S$2,531 for subsidised public patients, S$7,651 to S$8,647 for unsubsidised public patients and S$21,157 for private hospital inpatients, all including GST.
Can I use MediSave or an Integrated Shield Plan?
Some clinics are MediSave-accredited and accept insurance, but limits and payouts depend on your plan and case. Check with CPF Board and your insurer. New Integrated Shield riders since 2019 include a co-payment of at least 5%.
Why does a complicated or emergency operation cost more?
MOH codes complicated cases separately (SF706G), with higher fee benchmarks. Adhesions, repeat surgery, altered anatomy, earlier inflammation or an impacted stone can raise the surgeon's fee, and urgent after-hours surgery may be charged above the benchmark.
Is gallbladder removal done as day surgery?
It can be. MOH publishes day-surgery bills for both routine and complicated cases, and its private hospital benchmark assumes an average 2-day stay. Your surgeon will advise which suits you.
What costs are added to the operation itself?
Expect consultation fees (for example, Surgicare's start from S$200 before GST), plus any tests, scans and follow-up visits. In hospital, doctor's ward visits are benchmarked at S$230 to S$450 a day including GST. Ask for an itemised estimate.
